St George's Church is a former Anglican church in Wolverhampton built in 1830. It later became a Sainsbury's supermarket from the 1980s until they relocated by 2013-14.

The former St George's Church is at St George's Parade, Wolverhampton, WV2 1AZ.

 

In brief

A Commissioners' Church built from 1828 to 1830 to the designs of architect James Morgan. St George's Church was made redundant in 1978 and became a Sainsbury's Supermarket in 1986. But in 2015, Sainsbury's moved to a new store near Ring Road St Mark's.

The former St George's Church - history

St George's was built from 1828 to 1830 by James Morgan (a partner of John Nash) of Ashlar with a slate roof, of a rectangular plan.

The Grade II listed former parish church was part of the Church of England in the Diocese of Lichfield.

The building had room to accommodate 2038 people, 706 sitting in pews, 1332 in free seats for the use of the poor.

It is a similar design to St John's Church in Wolverhampton (completed in 1776) and St Paul's Church in Birmingham (completed in 1779), but by a different architect. St George's though was built around 50 years later (completed in 1830).

It became a Grade II listed building in 1949.

The church closed for good in 1978, but remained empty until it was turned into a Sainsbury's supermarket in 1986.

Sainsbury's remained in the building until at least 2013 or 2014, as by 2015 they had relocated to a new building near Ring Road St Mark's.

The new Sainsbury's is at Wolverhampton St  Marks, Alexandra Street, WV3 0TE.

The car park next to the former church remains open, while the former Sainsbury's is available for a future redevelopment opportunity.

The former St George's Church is visible from the tram heading over Bilston Street Island.
